I don't mind that the amplifier won't display any information about what is currently playing, since I am usually the other side of the room and can't read it from there anyway. So 'all I need' is something like the excellent squeezelite (which I use a lot when at my desktop PC), but instead of outputting to a local audio device, replicates what foobar can do using UPnP over my wired network. I therefore know that sending digital audio in this way is possible. This streams anything that foobar2000 is playing locally directly to my amplifiers over the network using lpcm at up to 24/192,000 quality - more than good enough for me. I have used foobar2000 (running under wine on linux) with a UPnP plugin that provides a 'playback stream capture' mode. These are UPnP compliant, and will accept streaming across my home network. I have good quality amplifiers connected to my wired home network. In my case I need a laptop or tablet since classical tracks tend to have long names that occupy too much space on a smartphone. I can control what LMS is doing from a wireless device with a browser anywhere in the house. The best non-LMS server I have found is MinimServer (a UpNP server that has a really clever way of selecting tracks and has many other good features), but it can't do the more sophisticated stuff. For instance, on no other system have I found a way to play a random Classical Work (i.e. LMS (with several plugins) is still far and away more flexible than anything else I have found for organising and selecting music. Many of the solutions on various threads suggest hardware replacements, and I'm a little puzzled as to why this is necessary at all. The mobile interfaces are also very restricting when they don't allow you to do what you want to do.Like many I have been wondering what to do if my squeezebox devices fail. The mobile interfaces are very convenient when they're convenient. The more we move over to a mobile controlled ecosystem the less we will be able to do with our data and media playback. The whole mobile app ecosystem is like wearing a straightjacket that always limits what you can do. It is not possible to do the same type of search on the mobile app. ![]() For example, if I want to browse all of the high-res files I have that are 192,000 Hz I can do that easily on the laptop running JRiver Media Center. The laptop allows me to do advanced searches that the mobile device interfaces just do not allow. However, when I want to do real big boy management and searches of my library I have to use the laptop running Windows. ![]() The mobile style interfaces work OK when all I want to do is basic browsing of my library and basic control of what is playing now. ASSET UPNP REMOVE STREAMS TUNEIN FULLMobile device interfaces are always restricting compared to what you can accomplish and do on a real computer like a full laptop or desktop. The big problem I have with mobile devices is that the interfaces are like being at best handcuffed, at worst straightjacketed in a Houdini escape act. On the 12" screen this kinda works, on the 7" screen I can convince myself that the interface almost works, on a 5" phone screen it doesn't work well. A 12" screen does even better allowing me to see more albums on the screen at a time. Browsing a library of 5,000+ albums on a phone size screen is not my idea of good interface design. I don't like using the phone to control audio because the screen is too small to show enough to be useful. I should add, that when I do use a mobile device to control the music I use either an old 7" android tablet or a Chromebook 12" 2-in-1 style laptop that can run Android apps and fold over to be a big fat heavy thick touchscreen tablet. ![]()
